Have rip-roaring Fun watching Animals getting drunk

Marula tree is a beautiful African tree that produces wonderful and tasty fruits! The story has been going on for ages that the yummy fruits make elephants drunk. Inspired, it has even become a liquor, called “Amarula” for connoisseurs, a little like Bailey’s!
Marula fruit – said to be sweet, tart and refreshing – apparently has an intoxicating effect when consumed after it has ripened and fallen to the ground.
Ross Couper, a field guide who works for a luxury safari outfit saw the elephants begin to stumble around and fall over their siblings.
He said: ‘We watched in awe because the youngsters definitely seemed to display signs of being rather tipsy.’

However, it has also been claimed that the unusual behaviour is actually caused by eating beetle pupae that live in the bark of Marula trees.

It is believed that during the summer in South Africa, the Marula fruit becomes ripe and ready to eat. However, most animals wait for the fruits to become overripe and ferment naturally. What follows is like a “Marula animal party” with African animals attempting to stumble back to their abodes after getting drunk.

One too many, mate? If you substituted the animals for humans, it’s the sort of scene you might see at a popular bar!
The story is traced back to the 1974 to be exact, when a guy by the name of Jamie Uys produced two documentaries called “Beautiful People”. The footage, among other things showing wild animals getting drunk after eating the Marula fruits, became an immediate hit. Since then millions of people believe that elephants do indeed get drunk with such “potent” fruits!    The question is: is it true?Sorry to disappoint, but Jamie Uys’ footage was totally staged and the animals were in fact fed with alcohol. The directors soaked the food and then filmed it! Today the film would’ve been controversial, but back then it was another story!                                                                                                                                                                                                    Courtesy: Daily Mail, UK
